Directionality of light emission in three-dimensional opal-based photonic crystals (Invited Paper)

Experimental and theoretical studies of the emission directionality diagrams of a perylene dye covering the inner surface of three-dimensional opal-based photonic crystals with incomplete photonic bandgap are reported. Directionality diagram of emission intensity is interpreted in terms of the spontaneous emission suppression by photonic band gap and the emission enhancement due to photon focusing phenomenon. A theoretical model is based on the classical analysis of an angular distribution of the radiated power of a point dipole.

Drivers of greenhouse gas emissions in the Baltic States: A structural decomposition analysis

Since the mid-1990s three Baltic States have significantly increased their per capita gross domestic product (GDP) and at the same time have managed to keep the CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions low. We used structural decomposition analysis to identify the drivers of change for CO2e emissions in these countries between 1995 and 2009, a period that includes the collapse of the Soviet Union, restructuring and economic growth and the great recession. Are the determinants of CO2 emissions converging among OECD countries?

This paper studies convergence in CO2emission intensity (CO2 emissions over GDP) among OECD countries over the period 1960-2008 based on its determinants, namely, energy intensity (energy consumption over GDP) and the so-called carbonisation index (CO2 emissions over energy consumption). We apply the Phillips and Sul (2007) methodology, which tests for the existence of convergence clubs. Our results highlight that differences in emission intensity convergence are more determined by differences in convergence of the carbonisation index rather than by differences in the dynamic convergence of energy intensity.

Tunable Phosphorescent Emission through Energy Transfer within Multilayer Thin Films Based on a Carbazole-Based Host and Ir(III)-Complex Guest System

A new method to tune both phosphorescence emission intensity and spectroscopic colors based on the alternatively structured host/guest multilayer thin films prepared by the spin-assisted LbL deposition is presented. Their emission characteristics are demonstrated with pairs of positively charged Ir-PEI complexes as guests and negatively charged CBZ-PAA as hosts. The phosphorescent emission of Ir-PEI complexes is enhanced by the energy transfer from the host to the guest and, additionally, this energy transfer can be finely tuned by the insertion of spacer layers between the phosphorescent donor and acceptor layers to vary the emission intensity as well as to render different emission colors.

Fluorescence, Browning Index, and Color in Infant Formulas during Storage

Free and total fluorescent compounds, browning index, and color formation were measured in milk-based powdered infant formulas (IF) during 2 years of storage at 20 and 37 degrees C. The excitation spectra from 415 nm emission show three peaks (ex lambda1 = 270 nm, lambda2 = 325/315 nm, lambda3 = 350 nm) and from 347 nm excitation two emission peaks (415 and 520 nm), and no wavelength shifts were observed. Temperature and time of storage exert in general no significant effect on the development of fluorescence emission intensity and browning index.
